Insect control has been a headache for livestock producers. The methods
used range from bug lights to parasites. None of these methods are ever
consistently over 50% effective. Along with that, most methods are labor intensive
requiring the producer to take time out of a busy schedule and insect control is
not done on a timely basis.
Insects on the other hand are very consistent. They become active as soon as
weather permits. This means that as the temperature warms up, they start
reproducing. One typical female adult fly lays from 250 to 1250 eggs in a two to
five week period. From the time the egg is laid to the formation of an adult is 9
to 43 days, depending on temperature an moisture conditions. Multiply this times
the number of flies in a typical barn on a hot day and the resulting population is
the cause of most fly problems.
The Automist system answers the problem of ineffective, labor intensive insect
control. Being an automatic system, Automist sprays the facility on a regular
preset schedule. Along with that Automist engulfs the facility with insecticide
spray in about 1 minute, not allowing the flies to escape as they do with other
methods. Using this technology, plus effective, safe natural Pyrethrin insecticide,
Automist controls insects by killing a larger number each time it sprays, thus
breaking the insects breeding cycle.
Automist system owners experience insect control not only in the barn, but also see
fewer flies on the farm site. As with any method of insect control, the Automist
system should be used in conjunction with good manure management, moisture control
and general farm sanitation.
Stable Owners
The stable owner is very aware
of the need for insect control. Flies cause horses to become nervous and hard to
handle, breeding activity decreases and horses can go off feed when flies are
present. If it is a boarding facility, good insect control can mean more business.
Horse owners want a stable where their horses are well cared for and contented. For
the horse breeder, controlling flies can increase the animals performance and
improve your image with the prospective buyer or neighbor.
Dairymen
For dairy cows, flies create
aggravation that can lead to lower milk production. Flies also present a sanitation
problem on pipelines and other areas that are required to be kept clean for milk
production regulations. In addition to this, flies also present a disease potential
and health hazard to you stock.
What Is The
Automist System?
Automist is an automatic insect
control system that is permanently installed in a facility. Automist uses nozzles
that are mounted to the ceiling or walls, these nozzles are connected by nylon
tubing. The nozzles and tubing are then pressurized by a pumping system.
The pumping system consists of a
1/4 HP electric motor, a brass positive displacement 250 PSI pump, plumbing and an
electric timer assembly mounted on top of a 55 gallon poly reservoir. The timer
assembly consists of a 24 hour timer that controls spray cycles and an interval
timer that controls spray cycle duration.
How Does The
System Work?
The Automist system is installed
at predetermined number of cubic feet per nozzle. This is based on the ceiling or
mounting height of the nozzle and ranges from 800 cubic feet per nozzle for a 7
foot mounting height to 1800 cubic feet per nozzle for a 16 foot or higher nozzles
height. Once installed according to these guidelines, the system is timed to spray
1 oz. of liquid spray solution per 1000 cubic feet.
The Automist system lends itself
to any facility type or multiple facilities. The Automist basic unit can handle up
to 60 nozzles and the Automist heavy-duty basic unit can handle 60 nozzles and up,
when properly designed.
